To my Grandson - who I love

You are dealt an ace of spades and I a king of clubs
Next you receive a jack and I receive a queen
And so it goes until the deck is completely dealt
And each of us must play, the hand we hold.

You shout to me in gusto, it is not fair, Grandpa
I wanted the ace of hearts, why should you have it?
How can I play the game, with such lopsided cards?
And anything below a five, who would want them?

When we are born, we are given a full hand to play,
The ace of spades stands for a wonderful intellect,
The ace of hearts, a life sensitive to the passions of others,
The ace of diamond stands for fame, fortune and honor.

The ace of clubs, could it stand for physical beauty and sports?
But whatever they stand for, a jack is less than a queen,
And a five is less than a six as a four is less than a five,
No one has a perfect hand, not you and not me.

The constitution says we are born equal but it not so,
What really counts is what we do with our abilities
That was dealt us when we started this life as a baby,
Brothers and sisters are often different as day and night.

I would love to sing but you would not want to hear me
So I save your ears by not singing a single note
Then there are some things we have a talent to explore
But such talent is wasted if it is rushed and out of sequence.

You may someday find recognition for story writing
But you will not get there by trying to jump there.
It will take many years of practice and learning the rules
So find a work you can enjoy and in your off-hours write.

The mind is tricky in that it will create a passion
For a world that is unreal and unobtainable, claiming you can do it.
But such a mind pattern will make you fail at the everyday things
Like making money and obtaining stability in your life.

One needs to force the mind to think on things that need to be done
Turn off the day-dreams that will prevent proper thought on today's needs
Yes, I know it is not easy but I can tell you how it can be done.
And you are the only one who can control your mind.

I remember when I wanted to be a pastor but lacked the education
Had a wife and 4 daughters but did that stop my passion?
No, I went to night seminary classes and filled my time in day-dreams
But one day, I woke up by directing my thoughts elsewhere.

The recognition you seek can be enjoyed at 40 years of age
And is more attainable than at twenty-one young years.
You cannot put an old man's wisdom on young shoulders
So wait your turn, turn your energies to preparing yourself for today.

I have found fame is as fickle as the wind when I was in Sister City Work
One day, well known and then a move to Wenatchee and again unknown.
There is a Bible verse that says your treasure is where your heart is,
God does not care how many honors you have won.

If you have forgotten God and if you have stopped living close to Him,
What you can expect is black thoughts and violent stories.
One who loves Jesus, thinks of good things and wants to help others
Because He seeks God, God blesses his endeavors, been so in my life.

So please accept the hand life has dealt to you with a happy mind.
And set your aim at using these talents in a realistic way.
Turn to Jesus and ask Him to help you for that is my prayer for you
And know I love you and call me anytime, Grandpa

P. S. Your mind will encourage you to throw away this letter
But don’t do it and instead read it over and over again.
For it was sent out of love and concern, holds your health key
From a Grandpa who loves you and is proud of you and wants your best.

In you, my grown grandchild
   I feel reborn again, in you
      I seek to see you, reach out
         Just like I did, so many years ago.
           Know that, I am here for you always,
             Even though it may be, in my thoughts.
