DRAMA SKIT

WHICH WAY GEORGE? by Frank E. Henrich A Skit in the Play Drama -- The Return to the Corral

The play takes place in an airport lobby. Two men characters; both men in the thirty to forty year age range. John is sitting down and George walks up to him. The spotlight is on them only and the house lights are down dim.

George: John Martin! Yes, it is John Martin! (pause) I just can’t get over this, seeing you again. Do you still have that small business?

John: Yes, I do, and it’s coming along fine.

George: What are you doing now, with your hobbies, you know, that type of thing?

John: Well, George, I’ve been very busy in outreach work for my church. An outreach to bring back the lapsed Christians, I call them cowboy and cowgirl Christians who don’t think they need to go to church any more.

George: That sure fits me. John, I can see you’re still at it, more interested in God than in the world. I thought you would have grown out of that spell by now. I just don’t know what to think of you. I was at a funeral last Saturday and that minister wouldn’t shut up. That’s the last funeral I’m going too! He went on and on about something called ultimate concern. Can you imagine those two words, --- why they didn’t have anymore meaning to me than a (pause) than a cat has with a dog. Well, anyway, do you know that he kept ranting on and on so that I missed my foursome. There is a foursome that I play golf with and when I got there I was too late. They had gone already and found someone else and I had to play with two people that I don’t care two hoots about. When I left the funeral, that minister had the gall to give me a pamphlet on ultimate concern.

I tell John, just too much preaching and too much church going isn’t any good for anyone, especially for you, a businessman. After all how can you expect people to buy from you if you don’t have a gold chain around your neck and at least one diamond ring on your fingers. You’re nearing 40 years old; you’re supposed to look very prosperous and here you are in this drab sports coat and there is nothing about you that stands out at all (pause) except a lack of hair on the top of your head. John you just have to come out of this and come back into the world.

John: Well George, I appreciate your concern for me, you note I use the word concern. Do you know where the words, ultimate concern came from that the preacher used?

George: No, can’t say I do.

John: It comes from the work of a German by the name of Tilley and he said that whatever is our ultimate concern, our whole life will center on it. If our ultimate concern is God, our life will center on the things God rates high, like devotion, family, a good moral life. If a person spends all his time working in his business life and gives not a hoot or holler for his family, well then that business is his ultimate concern. It is as simple as that, there is nothing complicated about it. I think your ultimate concern is playing golf! I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that. Please excuse me.

George: That’s all right, John
-- I suppose I had that coming to me, but I do enjoy playing golf. I take Wednesday afternoon off to play golf and then I play all Saturday morning and sometimes a small part of the afternoon. But usually I get home by two.

John; What does your wife Sarah think about that?

George: I can’t say she’s very happy about it
-- but it’s what I like to do.

John: Do you suppose George that they’ll have golf courses in Heaven?

George: Well I don’t know and I’m not going to worry about it – live today and let tomorrow take care of itself.

John: Oh! Well there is a problem there, isn’t there?

George: I don’t see any problem at all, after all it’s the young like me that sets the pace in this world.
--- I will not let it pass by my parade.

John: Ha, I’m afraid that it’s already passed by your parade; you’re as old as I am. Aren’t you?

George: Well I look like I’m 35,
-- did you notice that I’m wearing a hairpiece?

John: Yes, I noticed that and it does make you look your look younger, but why do you want to look younger?George: Man are you out of it! Youth is the thing for today, wakeup John – get youthful!John: Isn’t that kind of a losing battle?George: I can keep trying, as long there’s an ounce of energy in me.

John: You mean you spend all your energy trying to keep young. Why do you do that? (pause) I bet you do that because you’re just afraid of death and anyone who looks old reminds you that someday you’re going to die and may go down to
--- (softly) hell -- with the life you are leading.

George: There you go John – preaching at me again, I'm not going to let your do that. Let me tell you about this party that I am going to attend when I get to Los Angeles. We have this large client who is going to buy a million dollars worth of goods from us this coming year. We are going to throw a party like you have never seen before. At this party – let me tell you – there’s going to be beautiful women, caviar, everything you can drink – anything you can eat and (proudly) I’m going to be there!

John: You mean to say you are going to buy their business by giving a party?

George: Hey you’re really out of it, aren’t you? That’s the way it’s done now – of course they know they are expected to buy from us. They’ll pretend like – that's not the reason at all, but they’ll know and we’ll know and it will be taken care of. And they’ll know that next year, we’ll have another blast like this,
-- isn’t that exciting John -- why don’t you come with me?

John: No thank you for that does not appeal to me. My business maybe is smaller but its gets my efforts for 8 to 10 hours a day and the Lord Jesus blesses it. I place Him first and the work hard. My customers know I am a Christian and that they can trust me to be honest in my dealings with them. This way I can be a Christian businessman and I have a peace in me. The peace of Jesus.

George: Well! I must say,
-- you are peaceful all right - - and I’m sure that I wouldn’t want your kind of peace, I want to live for today. I know Jesus is real but all this church attending, isn’t necessary? (Looks at his watch)

Time to board my plane John. You know it’s been great seeing you – always enjoy talking to you. Promise me one thing, we will always be friends and have chats like this. John: (As George walks away) I can’t promise that George – because someday we might not be going to the same place. But think about what I said and take Sarah back to church. Will you promise to think about it? George: If it will make you happy, I promise I will. Bye for now.

(George places his hands on his face in act of discomfort) George: Could John be right? Could I be going to hell? Harry, my golf buddy, he died last month. Where did Harry go? (Throwing his hands in the air and looking up he says, ) "Oh! God! Are you real?" Pause (reaching into his pocket, he pulls out a white piece of paper.) (Staring at the piece of paper, he says in surprise tone) An invitation to attend a John’s church! I didn’t see him put that in my pocket. (with his eyes cast upward) Could it be that it is not too late for me? (George freezes in position – end of play).

SECERT Because John professes his faith in Jesus Christ openly, he will not be asked to do illegal or immoral things because they know here he stands and what his answer will be no. Yes, a Christian business person can live a Christian life. His or her safety lies in that their business acquaintances know of their Christian backbone. If you hide your Christianity and then are asked to do something wrong, and you say no, you will lose your job as soon as they can arrange it. Not so if you are never asked.
