CHRISTIAN POEMS & CHRISTIAN DEVOTIONALS FOR THE WEARY & SEARCHING FOR GOD
NATIVITY BIBICAL MEDIEVAL ART

The birth of Jesus is painted in a letter P in a 1395 AD manuscript. Remember the monks were not allowed to change the Biblical text as they copied it but they could paint images in the first letter of the first word in a paragraph. Here is an excellent example. Look closely at all the small images within the letter. This image is enlarged around 10 times from the original. I believe they used a magnify glass called a Monk’s Glass to paint the small design. Notice how it magnifies without distortion. A glass developed around 1000 AD for monks who developed age eye disease.

Luke 2:6-7 6 And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. 7 She gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the village inn. NLT
